Oliver Twist the MOVIE!! September 27, 2006

We had put the “new” Oliver Twist film on our Netflix que at the beginning of the Summer and it just came to us this week.  Normally I don’t write a review of an older film let alone one in our Netflix que that we didn’t really care to see in the first place but I thought I’d mention a few points that may interest you in a film that I wasn’t interested in myself.

I’ve only read one Dickens novel and that was an audio version. While I enjoyed his prose, the particular way he makes seemingly simple and mundane situations overly extravagant, I always find it a bit long winded and of topics that I can’t particularly relate to fully.  However, much like Shakespeare, Dickens writes for an audience, he writes like a professional, someone who is making their living at writing, and he knows how to serve an audience’s needs.  The overall plot and narrative he tells in Oliver Twist which might have been lost on the major public, can now be seen on film in a easier to swallow form.

I won’t ruin the story for you but I had no interest in the movie and the lowest of expectations for it, but the cinematography, the actors, the actual story that Dickens conceived is intriguing and interesting, even for our modern audience.  I was able to sit through the whole thing without being too bored and near the end was actually quite compelled to see it’s completion.   Basically, Dicken’s story caters to a universal audience, which makes the story something we can even learn from today and although it isn’t filled with sex and bewbs, it still keeps your eye without some of the cheaper tricks we see employed today *coughNipTuckcough*.

Last Day September 26, 2006

End of September is here and my last day at the Microlab was today. Not really eventful, looking back at the situation I suppose there’s no reason it should be, I came in to help put on the new authentication system on the computers but it wasn’t ready quite yet so I never will get to see the whole lab with a log in system. However, the affects of it have been felt, the freaky weirdo people who were doing drugs in the bathroom are gone, the scary teenage kids who rocked out to people’s myspace profiles and stole our head phones are gone, creepy weekend rape porn guy is gone, etc etc. The new version of Deepfreeze lets desk staff message the entire lab when we are about to close so they have no excuse not to save their work, making the only painful things about the job completely eliminated. Even the monthly computer updates we did have been modernized, no need for us to go through, we actually used the computers to do the work for us… I know what a concept computers make less work to do!

This ending, of quite a long time at the lab, was sad, my first real long job that was great for school since I could study and had flexible hours and for the most part did nothing, I know many people are familiar with that aspect of the job. This summer was slow as molasses the first half but in the end picked up to be almost like a full time job with the amount of projects we were undertaking and it was great. I made sure to say goodbye to the 2 or 3 people still left in the Library Staff worth talking to, and while that made me sad they were all happy for me.

I was a bit apprehensive at first about being done working and not for sure having any particular interviews lined up but yesterday I lucked out and have an actually promising interview coming up so things are not so bleak. So this ending spawns a new beginning for us, the end of September was officially the end of me being a Student, and now a fully employed adult, waiting to take on the world. Thoughts of finally getting out of Northgate, moving to a better place, new job with better pay and benefits, things are looking forwards and upwards.

Labor Day Weekend more like :( September 1, 2006

I tend not to look ahead to far, and only recently have really tried to keep an active marker on what my future will be and how to get there, but simple things still elude me.  My upcoming weekend is going to suck. Everyone has such big plans for their last hurrah of the Summer, and I didn’t realize until today that Jen was ditching me to go to Ashland with her family once again, I have no real desire to play WoW for 3 days straight, and essential nothing to do or eat.  I guess I was looking too far ahead and missed out on what’s right in front of me, a very lonely weekend of me and the Cat… oh and Lumines.

Lumines is a puzzle game for PSP, it is freaking rad, I already talked about it on my 1up blog so if you are interested, which really you probably shouldn’t be go check it out.

Most notably I have been trying to save money, despite buying Lumines yesterday.  Jen and I went grocery shopping, yes thrilling I know, but started to really take into account what were spending, what would be consumed, what would be wasted, and would it be worth it in the end.  I used the crude analogy of “it’s like living in the pioneer days!” since every things counts, better not to waste and want things that weren’t really any good for us so we can do something better with the money.  Looking back at this makes me feel old, or maybe just poor, but it’s good to have someone else to go through these things with.

Oh, I almost forgot that my laptop aparently might kill me so now I get to send away my battery, which was easy enough to arrange but I’m sure will be far more painful in reality when they can’t manage to find a time to deliver it and it takes and extra 3 weeks to get to me or worse yet I have to take a bus down to a fedex way the fuck in the industrial area of downtown.

So a boring weekend ahead, where I will hopefully develop some intricate plans that would keep me so absorbed that next Wednesday will be here in no time, not that it brings with it anything besides more work.
