Oliver Twist the MOVIE!! September 27, 2006

We had put the “new” Oliver Twist film on our Netflix que at the beginning of the Summer and it just came to us this week.  Normally I don’t write a review of an older film let alone one in our Netflix que that we didn’t really care to see in the first place but I thought I’d mention a few points that may interest you in a film that I wasn’t interested in myself.

I’ve only read one Dickens novel and that was an audio version. While I enjoyed his prose, the particular way he makes seemingly simple and mundane situations overly extravagant, I always find it a bit long winded and of topics that I can’t particularly relate to fully.  However, much like Shakespeare, Dickens writes for an audience, he writes like a professional, someone who is making their living at writing, and he knows how to serve an audience’s needs.  The overall plot and narrative he tells in Oliver Twist which might have been lost on the major public, can now be seen on film in a easier to swallow form.

I won’t ruin the story for you but I had no interest in the movie and the lowest of expectations for it, but the cinematography, the actors, the actual story that Dickens conceived is intriguing and interesting, even for our modern audience.  I was able to sit through the whole thing without being too bored and near the end was actually quite compelled to see it’s completion.   Basically, Dicken’s story caters to a universal audience, which makes the story something we can even learn from today and although it isn’t filled with sex and bewbs, it still keeps your eye without some of the cheaper tricks we see employed today *coughNipTuckcough*.
