The School Year starting should be the start of the New Year IMO September 7, 2011

I always feel like the start of the school year, even though I haven’t been in school for years, feels like the start of a new year. And it really is for most people under 21, new classes, new clothes, the weather changes almost abruptly, vacations end, it happens between two seasons and you can tell.
Since it feels so new, and I live in a new town, I’m going to start getting more active and lose some of this intense beer belly I have put in through my vigorous and frequent enjoyment of local Portland breweries. I work mostly from home and bike into the office but you might be surprised how much exercise you get if you take public transit to work, walking to and from the stop and to work is way more active than sitting at a desk and walking to the kitchen.
I’ve started trying to do all things that feel like a “should do” throughout the day. Items like cleaning, dishes, walking dogs, things that you can put off until they get too big to ignore. It’s started to work a bit, made me realize that I allocate too much time to mindless internet browsing. I used to have a good grip on this but after discovering Reddit it’s really gotten bad (in my eyes).
The other realization I’ve made through doing “what I should be doing” is that I carry several pieces of physical baggage around with me when I move. When we found our current house it was small on purpose, to help us downsize our lifestyle, but we never really got rid of these things we don’t use anymore. It might be interesting to just list all the stuff I use regularly and see what actually makes that list and what can be removed…
Anyway, I’ve learned that most people probably still have this feeling in them, that the school year is a time of change, and is a good time to try and instigate a small change in your life that can lead to bigger changes. It’s a bunch of small changes that build up to large lifestyle changes.
