Day 8 – Monday July 14, 2009

Work is slowling falling to pieces as my time is split between that priority issue last week and training. We’ve hit a new high on ticket count (145) and I’m sure it’s even higher today. I told my manager this but he still wants my time allocated to that effort.
Home was good, I called comcast for the Internet since after the last reset the modem just cycles itself endlessly now. I then started searching through boxes for my psp charger and actually found it so I can play ff tactics. I’ve been playing the new one and its been crap so far. Super easy and gaining abilities through weapons is dumb. I like the days when you just learned new moves and changed classes and weapons were just for making you stronger. We also found that qfc has smithwicks so we bought and finished a case last night while watching Friday night lights. We also hit the bookstore for the new issue of bicycling magazine. Thus far spending this week is already high but I’m hoping to bring it down today by bringing lunch and no more impromptu bookstore shopping.
Day 7 – Saturday & Sunday July 13, 2009

I was invited to play cricket on Saturday but we had family come into town so doing both was out of the question but I do want to try playing it sometime. Jen made a delicious breakfast of pancakes right when Lisa and Stephen arrived. We transported everyone down to recycled cycles to pick up rental bikes and rode out to Golden Gardens and Paseo again. It was a really casual ride as my brother took the hybrid with all the equipment but we showed them a scenic bike view of Seattle and it was a beautiful day out. That evening we ate out at Kisaku for sushi and then over to cupcake royale in Ballard.
Sunday we got up early and Jen and I walked to the bookstore for ice coffee before we drove down to Olympia to have brunch with them at Terrace Falls resturaunt which I hadn’t noticed was and old people only type resturaunt until we showed up that day without jens grandparents. We left Phill at Stephens as he would drive both down to Vancouver that day. I finished the day off going to Best Buy to use my bday gift card and grabbed a new router (which has yet to help the Internet situation) instead of a new DSi. Since we were in Northgate I felt oddly nostalgic and wanted to eat at Azteca but it was closed for the day. We even tried the ram but they wouldn’t take my expired ID so I was certainly not eating there without a drink. We ended up back at the pub drinking many Smithwicks and having dinner.
Spending over the weekend could have been worse but came out something like:
4 Meals out
20$ extraneous expenses
Day 6 – Friday July 10, 2009

The devastation of the P2 ticket took every bit off free time I had. The day felt like the old days when I had fewer tickets and alot of meetings but I still had a crapton of other work to process. Lunch was the only redeeming part, we got most of the department to go out to lunch at owl n thistle and have a good time.
After work with my brother back in town we all went up to the jones, my favorite place to eat in Seattle and had drinks
and dinner. We left straight from there to downtown for the Final Fantasy concert at Benaroyal Hall with the Seattle Symphony. Since we were so early we hit the Brooklyn for some additional preshow drinks and then left for some rather spectacular seats in the center front rows. We even had better seats than Nobuo Uematsu himself who was present for the concert. I didn’t think I was going to like the show as much as I did as watching a symphony play in itself is rather dull. The music was fantastic, all pieces I knew and loved plus they played various cut scenes and gameplay footage on an overhead projector. Unlike other symphony shows the audience clapped at the end of every single song to the point that we had to cancel one of the songs and they still played an encore of One Winged Angel with Uematsu singing along in the Seattle Chorus.
It was a great evening!

The morning at work went as planned, more training and instruction. I’ve realized that teaching has helped focus and highlight the key aspects of my day to day work and has marginally increased my ability. The afternoon on the other hand went completely to hell when a priority ticket was raised from issues with the mail migration that we isolated to the migration itself and took all 3.75 hours I had left of the day. This puts all my other daily plans behind by half a day when we are already 130 tickets deep and a month late on most.
The evening was lazy a first, napping and dinner. Then learning the finer points of tennis with Casey and Kristin and then 3 intense rounds of pixel junk monsters.

Yesterday was a big day, I rode my bike into work on a spontaneous whim. The ride in was pretty easy minus one massive hill through Fred hutch but aside from the crappy quality of the seats I made it in unscathed. The ride home was much more difficult being right in downtown traffic and the massive uphill that is the udistict. I almost considered writing in today but my nethers need a day rest, we might regroup and try again Friday.
Work itself was the same as it’s been all week. Training and then trying to fit in tickets and my own work. I finally achieved one of the goals I set on Monday, I’m hoping to achieve more than 1 a day and get up to 3. I also realized that despite getting alot done, it’s not what I want and I need to be capturing those thoughts into evernote or something.
At home I was just so tired from the ride home that I didn’t do much beyond watch the rest of freaks and geeks and cowboy bebop. Freaks And Geeks got better with every episode and I did enjoy how it ended. Bebop has been interesting, I really like the Edward character.
Lastly I seem to have fixed the home Internet by switching out a Ethernet cable between the modem and router. I’m almost hoping it breaks just so I don’t feel bad for it being down for so long.

Again, I feel like the day just gets away from me despite looking ahead and planning the day out. Looking back I didn’t start the day how I planned and that may have sparked the thread that led me down non-productivity. I also let in alot of interruptions from people and didn’t stick to my game plan. The issues they brought to me did have high urgency and priority but did they need to be delt with immediately? I felt stressed and ill prepared for meetings but it didn’t reflect that in my abilitly to perform, just my well being.
I suppose I did alot, three short meetings, training, fixed a bigger problem, assisted with several individual questions, worked through a single ticket, managed an escalated issue. I even did a few career managment things, putting them on the radar but still needing a plan of action. Next week when I’m done doing training I should start seeing alot of time come back.
Intestingly one ticket I heard about today was a major ticket on network latency due to employees trying to watch the MJ service.
Bowling league in the evening went well, Taco Segway is back in the top 3 and I had some great games all above my average, plus two pitchers of beer so my drunken style form greatly improved. After that we headed home and I just konked out.

Monday back to work didn’t feel that productive. I had alot of meetings, and not a clear goal of my top 3 priorities. I did help alot of people out but nothing the directly tied to my goals. Lunch with the coworkers was nice, Ive been trying to save money so I can buy a new bike and not having to pay for lunch helped that effort. I also met one of my co-workers who works from home for the first time. The balance of work to breaks is starting to pan out better, not spending hours straight without even stretching has helped back pain at the very least.
The evening was rather dull but very relaxing. Our internet is still out and I just haven’t wanted to call the cable company to tell them the extensive troubleshooting I’ve gone through. On the plus side no Internet has really made me utilize my iPhone to the fullest which helps me deal with the price tag that goes with the monthly bill. It’s also made me more productive as I’m not spending time on the Internet. Regardless, I was really tired and ended up just napping on the bed for quite some time. I also spent a few minutes straightening up, watching more cow boy bepob, and reading through the monocole. If nothing else the act of writing all of this out makes me confront some issues I have after work: lack of energy. Getting home and wanting to do nothing but nap, even still means I need to regulate my eating better and see if it helps at all to keep that metabolism up.

Instead of playing DS or reading I’m going to see if I can update every morning on the ride in to work with what has been going on.
3 day weekend started with happy hour Thursday night with friends from work and Phill on his way to the train station to visit the family for the 3 day weekend. Despite the lucrative offers to stay at Sam’s cabin, we had too many other obligations.
Friday we got up a bit late, and headed out on a bike ride to golden gardens and paseo with Kristin and Casey. It was a good casual ride a despite the heat.
Saturday we went to Matts for a BBQ, where I had plenty to drink and abundant amounts of Pork riblets. We even put our feet into the apartment’s pool and hot tub after play some rock band. That night we play some tennis and Kristen rode over and we watched some fireworks from the park and my legs were bit up by bugs
Sunday started off lazy watching freaks and geeks as I was really hung over. We watched part of lost in translation which resulted in an afternoon nap. Afterwards we left in search of sushi, walking down to blue c sushi and back home. Since our Internet has been down we went to the pub to look at a commuter bike for Jen and then went to performance cycle and bought one for her. We then took a bike ride to UW and rode through campus and down to the Burke gilliman trail to the freemont bridge and enjoyed the view for a while. We finished the evening at the pub enjoying some Greek food and going over our plans for january.
Good three day weekend, alot more planned for July.

A few words for Christmas:
- Still a bit early for me to try and be happy and cognizant, need to remember to not stay up late watching scrooged with the family next year.
- White Christmas is over-rated. Being able to drive to see your family is better.
- starting on Christmas shopping early is really the way to go.
- Don’t buy yourself any stuff post November.
- Watch what you eat, holiday pounds really aren’t worth it most of the time. I regret eggnog.
- Pictures, movies, more memory capturing are always worth it in the long run
- Holiday films are only fun during the holiday, watch them while it lasts
- Vacation dates should be traded for working from home and snow days.

Here’s a few more attempts at mobile blogging. Funny how thanksgiving is mostly about sitting around with your family, mostly bored and wanting to do different things all in the name of spening time together as a family.
I feel mostly it’s because we all live such separate lives and only come together rarely that we’ve forgotten how to relate to one another. My personal goal is to identify more with the needs of my family and try to adapt a bit more to what everyone wants to do. Although I am usually reluctant to do so I usually end up enjoying everything more that way and I experience something new.
Our plans for the day are thanksgiving at Jens house and then the evening with mine. It’s still taking some time to get used to double holidays. I can’t quite imagine what it will be like when we have kids and the ordeal that will be.
Here’s to a restful holiday to everyone out there.
